Rochester Eye Doctor Announces Successful Surgical Implant Symfony Cataract Lens

Dr. Allan Robbins M.D. of, Rochester NY, Announces Successful Surgical Implant of Recent FDA Approved Tecnis Symfony ® Intraocular Cataract Lens System Designed to provide high-quality continuous vision so patients can see clearly at near, intermediate and far-away distances, and points in between, while wearing glasses less.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Robbins Eye announced today that Doctor Allan Robbins, a Rochester NY based eye doctor, is one the first eye surgeons in the nation to treat patients with a new class of Intra Ocular Lenses (IOLs), for cataract surgery, after it was recently approved by the FDA.

The first in a new category of IOLs, the Tecnis Symfony lenses are the only lenses in the United States that provide a full range of continuous high-quality vision following cataract surgery, while also helping people that may have presbyopia (the inability to focus on objects that are close). The FDA approval also includes a version of the lens for people with astigmatism.

Cataracts are a very common condition with over 3 million surgeries performed each year, with 75% of the surgeries being done on people 65 years and older. Many people who have cataracts also suffer from other focusing problems other problems such as presbyopia and astigmatism. Presbyopia, which affects most people over age 40, means people have lost the ability to focus on objects up close and require glasses to perform near visual tasks. Astigmatism is when the cornea is not optically round which required spectacles or contact lenses to create a clear image.

During cataract surgery, the natural lens of the eye is removed, and an artificial lens, called an intraocular lens, or IOL, is inserted into the eye. The IOL most commonly used in cataract surgery is a monofocal lens, which only allows the person to see at a single set point either distance or near but not both or in between. In contrast, the Symfony lens was specifically developed with features to improve both the range and quality of vision.

“The Symfony intraocular lens is an exciting new option I can offer my patients to improve their vision following cataract surgery, it is especially useful for those who have difficulty focusing on objects at near distances because of presbyopia,” said Allan Robbins M.D., of Robbins Eye based in Rochester NY operating out of Brighton Surgery Center. “Most of my patients do not want to have to be dependent on glasses for most daily tasks. We have had IOLs that correct astigmatism or Multifocals that focus distance and near but no IOL that provided a full range of vision AND able to correct astigmatism. Better uncorrected vision at multiple distances offers the patient with cataracts a new horizon of freedom previously unavailable.”
